2018 First Year Research Experience (FYRE) Scholars Application

Thank you for your interest in applying to be a FYRE Scholar and part of a STEM research group! 

Minimum qualifications to be considered for FYRE Learning Community:
  • Applicants must be entering Loyola as first year students in Fall 2018.  Transfer students are not eligible.
  • Applicants must intend to be a STEM (science, technology, engineering or math) major/minor OR have an Undecided major.
  • Applicants must intend to complete during 2018-2019 academic year (or have already completed via dual enrollment or AP credit) the equivalent of a one-year introductory level course in the area in which they will conduct research. 
  • FYRE Scholars will be required to enroll in one of the designated Loyola Seminars (UNIV 102) during the Spring 2019 semester as an introduction to their research.
  • FYRE Scholars will be required to participate in a full-time, three-week research program in a STEM field at the beginning of summer 2019. They will receive an $800 stipend for their participation. Room and board will also be provided only during the three weeks of research if they live on campus.
The Selection Committee will communicate with applicants via the email address reported on the application for admission to Loyola.  All applicants will receive email notification regarding their FYRE application status in mid-June.

Section IV: Certification and Submission
We anticipate the process will have a highly competitive pool of candidates and that we will have more applicants that spaces available in our process. The decisions made by the selection committee are final; if a candidate is not offered an opportunity to advance in the process, there is no appeals process.

Students selected for the FYRE Living Learning Community will participate in study groups. special programs related to STEM and STEM careers, social activities, and optional tutoring. In the Spring 2019 semester, FYRE students will be offered an opportunity to register for special sections of UNIV 102 that are designed to be introductions to research in different areas of mathematics, science, and computer science. At the beginning of the summer after the the Spring 2019 semester, students are are required to participate in a three-week research program in their area of study.  Students will receive an $800 stipend for their participation as well as room and board if needed.
